The study is about understanding the information access mechanism for visually impaired students in higher educational institutions. The study strives to achieve the following objectives:
(i) To ascertain difficulties in studies faced by visually impaired students in higher educational institutions in Delhi;
(ii) To understand the types of information being used by visually impaired students which promote their full participation in the academic and non-academic learning environments;
(iii) To ascertain the level of familiarity of visually impaired students in using special assistive devices and special assistive software(s);
(iv) To identify the most suitable format of information to meet the needs of students with visual impairment;
(v) To find out what kind of extra enabling information is needed by visually impaired students;
(vi) To ascertain the digital infrastructure provided by their respective institutions;
(vii) To understand the requirements of visually impaired students in order to satisfy their information needs and the aspirations from an information system suitable for them; and
(viii) To develop the proposed model online information system to provide access to the contents (containing a sample collection) of undergraduate courses in arts, humanities and social sciences
